About Pasadena Texas

The second largest city in Harris County, Pasadena Texas is part of the extensive Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. More than 150,000 people live in Pasadena today, many commuting to jobs in the petrochemical or aerospace industries that flourish here. In fact, Pasadena was once known as a farming mecca for growing strawberries and rice, but the oil gusher at Spindletop in 1901 launched the Texas Oil Boom and prompted ongoing petroleum exploration all around Galveston Bay. Refineries and chemical processing plants, shipping and high-tech businesses contribute to the diverse makeup of the city’s residents. They still host a strawberry festival here every year, but these days Pasadena may be more well known as the home of the John Travolta movie “Urban Cowboy.” The 1980 film set in the city’s gigantic Gilley’s honky tonk started a pop culture craze of country and western dancing, mechanical bull riding and cowboy chic. The club burned and was later demolished by the school district. Former co-owner and country singer/songwriter Mickey Gilley still lives in Pasadena.
