About Sugar Land Texas

Sugar Land Texas in Fort Bend County is a suburb 20 miles southwest of Houston. It was originally founded as a plantation in the mid 1800s, but not incorporated until 1959. The original owner, Samuel Williams, received a shipment of cane stalks from Cuba, giving birth to a new industry in Texas. The success of sugar cane crops and sugar mills earned the town a name change from Oakland Plantation to Sugar Land TX. Planned residential and commercial developments got under way in the ’60s and ’70s, including Sugar Creek and First Colony. Major corporations were attracted to the suburb as well, including Fluor and Unocal. By 1990, Sugar Land TX became one of the fastest growing communities in America, now estimating its population at more than 79,000. The Imperial Sugar refinery closed in 2002, but Sugar Land’s expansion continued with a revitalized Town Square, University of Houston site, annexation of nearby Avalon, opening a regional airport, building a satellite location for the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and recognition as the best small city for start-up businesses. In addition, Sugar Land has been noted by Money magazine as the nation’s third best place to live and the fifth safest city.
