About Tomball Texas

Over 10,000 residents call Tomball Texas home, but they consider the town much more than “just” a Houston suburb. Tomball lies 28 miles northwest of Houston along State Highway 249, where it first gained notoriety as a railroad town and then an oil town. It was named for Texas State Senator Thomas Henry Ball, who helped bring the railroad. A 100-foot gusher brought hundreds of new residents to Tomball in 1933, and local residents received free natural gas for more than 50 years in exchange for drilling rights. The economy continues to boom today, along with growth from Houston’s popular northwest quadrant, bringing in corporate residents including Compaq Computer, Kwik Kopy, and Friendswood Development. A variety of residential developments offer homes in every price range, and many equestrian-oriented subdivisions have been added to the mix. Downtown Tomball features Tomball Community College and the Tomball Museum Complex, which includes one of the oldest surviving cotton gins in Texas, a country doctor’s office, log cabin and restored gazebo. The population within the city limits is about 10,000, but more than 135,000 when you consider outlying areas. More than 80 percent of all Tomball homes were built since 1970.
